![]() Shortly after I had to watch and reconstruct a scene at the diner, and even later than that I had to give Chloe directions on which way to aim a gun while she was blindfolded. An early scene has Chloe asking Max to name all the items in her pockets and give some brief description of them, which caused me to have to trick her into showing them to me followed by looking them over, reversing time, and trying to reiterate little details of what I saw. Out of Time has a lot more fun with this, especially concerning Chloe and Max’s testing of how far her powers can go. The first episode had a few puzzles that only really seemed to serve as an example of what they could do, and not really use it in any extraordinary way. Out of Time also boosts up the number and challenge of puzzles. It’s not a life or death choice, but it was enough that I found myself contemplating reversing time to pick the other option out of fear that it wasn’t going to work the way I hoped. Max can either suggest she goes to the police, getting herself involved in the investigation in the process and becoming a further target to a kid she already knows is dangerous, or she can suggest Kate drops it which makes Kate upset and lest trusting of Max. Early on Kate suggests going to the police about the video, as she worries that local “so rich it’s insane” kid Nathan drugged her. Life is Strange instead mostly involves which friends I had to cater to and planning out actions for them. In Telltale’s games the choices are often between who does and doesn’t die which is effective for those types of games. It does lacks the constant dialogue options of Telltale’s games, Max often only has one route through a conversation, but the actual choices themselves are tough in a different way. The choices, both large and small, and dialogue still continue to be good enough for this type of game. I’m wondering where Life is Strange will go next, as it doesn’t quite have the intense action sequences or villains that Telltale’s games do, so there’s something going to go down. ![]() ![]() There’s a fun chunk of humor devoted to Chloe testing if Max really has powers, and a little bit of supernatural mystery thrown in for good measure. Outside of this, we get to see more of Chloe’s life with Rachel/without Max as she has to suffer from bad decisions made before the events of the game. While the first episode had me feel Kate was a little needy and troublesome to stick around, Out of Time made me sympathize with her as the episode made its way through her story. Depression and unwanted internet fame are big topics here, and they are handled well. Kate’s challenges take center stage here, and we get to see how the rumor spreading High School girls are going out of their way to slowly destroy Kate’s life. A real good chunk of the episode is devoted to Kate, the quiet Christian student who has the big misfortune of having a sex tape of herself on the Internet. Instead it more focuses on building the relationships between characters and how they got to the point they’re at. The second episode does mention this, but there’s not much progress made here. Out of Time had quite a bit to follow up on, and I think that it managed to do so pretty well.Īt the end of the first episode Max told Chloe about her time reversing powers and the two decided they would work on finding Rachael. Max’s story was interesting and the use of the time rewinding made for good puzzles and a different way for handling important story choices. The first episode of Life is Strange managed to surprise me, serving as a genuinely legitimate challenge to Telltale’s ever so popular episodic narrative games. There may be differences between versions. Reviewer’s Note: I played this game on the PlayStation 4. Available On: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One It’s got some fun Expanded Universe bits, the Millennium Falcon as an unlockable and even patched in the Naboo Starfighter from Episode I, back when The Phantom Menace was more promising-cool-thing than pop culture atrocity. Though Rogue Squadron didn’t have the Battle of Endor (which is okay because X-Wing Alliance did that brilliantly and makes more sense in a sim style), this was a very complete-feeling game for players who particularly love the space and ground battles of Star Wars. They should've been the first missions in the game! The only thing that drove me insane about Rogue Squadron is that its two best levels-and surely a reason to buy the game for most people-were the Death Star trench run and the Battle of Hoth, both of which were hidden bonuses that had to be arduously unlocked by collecting gold medals. ![]() ![]() It's a really easy game to get to grips with in terms of the way each Rebel craft moves, and it was nice counter-programming to the X-Wing series if you weren't always in the mood for a sim experience. Rogue Squadron, I suspect, was created to emulate Nintendo's brilliant Star Fox 64, with planets represented as little hubs and most completable in the space of about ten minutes. That’s partly because of the level of fan service employed in setting some levels in familiar locations (or some you heard in passing, like Kessel) or having the Millennium Falcon turn up halfway through a mission, but also because it’s so simple an arcade shooter that it's aged pretty well. I only ever played it on PC, and for someone watching the Star Wars Special Edition VHSs every day in 1999, Rogue Squadron blew me away. In the late '90s I was obsessed with Star Wars games-I think I still have a PC Gamer demo disc containing only Star Wars game demos that I played again and again for about two years-and Rogue Squadron is weirdly one of those titles considered an N64 game before a PC game, even though it came to PC first in North America. It’s still a brilliant shooter, featuring every Rebel spaceship with their own differences in sound design and feel (except the poor old B-Wing). When Rogue Squadron landed on GOG, I played through over half of it in one night. The neatest touch, which I've heard everyone bring up when discussing this game, is the comical windscreen wipe effect on your helmet that kicks in whenever its gets dirty or damaged. With decent dialogue and voice acting, too, it's still easy to recommend now. You can order them around with simple presses of the F button, prodding them towards highlighted parts of the environment to blow things up, converge on a single enemy, or take control of an area. ![]() If the prequels were more like this, you might even have enjoyed them.Īfter an extremely effective opening sequence where you watch the creation of your clone captain in first person, you're put in control of a squad of clone specialists. While Republic Commando looks a bit rough these days, it's refreshing to see that era of Star Wars executed with the right adult (but not too serious) tone. This light tactical FPS is one of the most enjoyable games to come out of the Clone Wars/Revenge of the Sith era, which is mostly remembered for disposable PS2 nonsense like Racer Revenge and Bounty Hunter. However, shambling zombies are a constant presence threatening your well-being. As with most survival games, 7 Days To Die has players rely on building a small base, crafting weapons, and maintaining a health and stamina meter in order to survive. And thanks to the inclusion of 7 Days To Die in the Game Pass library, we have another gem of a multiplayer game to dive into. You can never have too much it’s a classic. PowerWash Simulator is fantastic.Ī multiplayer zombie survival game on Xbox Game Pass is like having vanilla at an ice cream store. While the gameplay is bare in terms of mechanics, the ability to just sit with your friends and idly clean while you talk is not to be denied. The surprisingly satisfying PowerWash Simulator is by far the most relaxing game you and a team of up to six friends can play together. Sometimes, rather than hopping onto an MMORPG to grind some loot or rolling into some fast-paced online shooter, you just need to unwind with your buddies by cleaning a dirty bungalow. If you and your friends are looking for a superb example of an “interactive movie,” you can’t go wrong with As Dusk Falls. Up to eight players can join together to decide the fates of characters stuck in a hostage situation.įrom using majority rules to determine what a person says to quick-time events that need to be completed jointly in order for an action to succeed, As Dusk Falls does an admirable job incorporating a multiplayer component into a genre most would consider to be better suited to a single-player experience. However, the intricacies of its plot land ten times better than anything we’ve seen before, and it comes complete with a multiplayer component. As Dusk Falls is a narrative game in the vein of those we’ve seen from TellTale. If a competitive multiplayer game is not exactly up your alley, we’ve got an alternative that is just as entertaining. As said earlier, there’s a bit of a sharp learning curve, but it’s one that easily lends itself to mastery with practice. We’d recommend getting used to controls first before heading there though. And let’s not forget the Tower, the hub for starting matches with online strangers. The story is basically just a movie, but you can create rooms for you and your friends to go toe-to-toe with each other. As with most games in the genre, there is a bit of a learning curve as you figure out what combos to use and which characters best suit your style.īut after gaining a firmer understanding of what works (and what doesn’t), Guilty Gear Strive is the gift that keeps on giving. The visual style of Guilty Gear Strive alone is enough to recommend it to new players, but it’s honestly one of the most enjoyable fighting titles around. ![]() Even though it’s still in early access, Valheim is not a title to miss, and it’s one of the best multiplayer games on Xbox Game Pass right now.Įven though Dragon Ball FighterZ departed from our Game Pass library, a new fighting game has come to take its place.
